How to Prevent Costly HVAC Repairs This Summer: 6 Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Summer in South Florida means that your air conditioning system is working overtime, and the last thing you want is a breakdown when the AC is needed most. The good news is that there are some simple things you can do to keep your AC system running smoothly and to help prevent costly repairs.

Here are 6 expert-approved tips from the License to Chill team to protect your HVAC system this summer:

1. Change Your Air Filter Regularly

A clogged and dirty filter restricts airflow, forcing your AC to work harder, raising cooling costs, and can even lead to damage to the system over time.

👉 Tip: Check filters every 30 days and replace them if they look dirty, especially if you have pets or people in the household who have allergies.

2. Keep the Outdoor Unit Clear

The condenser, which is the unit located outside, needs breathing room. Leaves, dirt, and other debris around it can obstruct airflow and reduce the system’s efficiency.

👉 Tip: Keep at least 2–3 feet of clearance around the outdoor unit and gently rinse off coils with a hose with the power OFF.

3. Use a Smart Thermostat

Running your AC system 24/7 at the lowest possible temperature results in higher energy bills and increased wear on the system.

👉 Tip: Use a programmable thermostat or smart thermostat to raise the temperature when the household is empty and lower it before you return.

4. Seal Leaky Windows and Doors

If cool air is escaping the house, your AC system will need to run longer and work harder to maintain the temperature.

👉 Tip: Use weatherstripping or caulk to seal any gaps and keep the cool air inside the home where it belongs.

5. Check Vents & Registers

Closed or blocked air vents can cause uneven cooling and strain your AC system.

👉 Tip: Make sure all supply and return vents are clean and open, and that they are not blocked by any furniture, rugs, or curtains.

6. Schedule a Preventive Maintenance Visit

DIY tips can be helpful, but only a licensed technician can identify early signs of trouble and keep your AC system in optimal shape.

👉 Tip: We recommend a full AC system tune-up at least once a year, ideally before the peak of summer when air conditioning is needed most.

When in Doubt, Call the Pros.

Even with the best air conditioner care, some AC problems are just too complex or dangerous to DIY. If you notice signs of AC issues, such as strange noises, weak airflow, or warm air blowing from the vents, it’s time to take action. Don’t wait.
